Life Paper Scrapbook - July Colour Challenge

Life. Paper. Scrapbook. is, I believe, Manda Moore's 'not so little anymore' baby. If you haven't been there and had a look around stop what you're doing (oh no, that would be reading my blog LOL!) and go check it out. Seriously. There is a quarterly magazine chockablock full of inspirational projects. There's a blog featuring, amongst other goodies, fabulous Project Life creations. The international Design Team have something inspirational for everyone. On top of that, they run two challenges each month .. a sketch and colour palette challenges. Plus you're able to merge the two challenges into the one layout and enter that one layout in both challenges. Cool huh?! So anyways enough rambling LOL! This is my take of the colour challenge ..

Sunday

I found it a lot, lot harder than I had anticipated. Most likely if I had started with a white background and not been so tired I felt like a 97 year old lady shuffling around as I got out my materials, it may have come together a little easier. Again though, essentially we're looking at a combination of primary colours and as we know, that's my kryptonite!

Life Paper Scrapbook - August Colour Challenge

As, technically this is the July colour challenge, the due date is this coming Friday, the 9th of August. So if you want to join in the fun, now is the time to do so. 1-2-3 July challenge

The challenge this month at 1-2-3 is just brilliant!

Something about it seemed just perfect to me. Maybe because it had a nice 'wintery' feel about it? Funny thing is that when I started collating some supplies I very quickly came to the realisation that I don't scrap with navy. I had a few felt flowers (old, old, old Making Memories ones) and that was about it apart from some buttons. LOL! So I went through all my current patterned paper collections and dragged out anything and everything that had navy on it, grabbed some old denim children's clothes from the 'to be upcycled box' and set to work. I am so glad I did.

Extraordinary man

I don't want to go on too much about this layout but like I've said above, I am so glad I gave the challenge a go. I had this photo of my GB from when he was probably only about 18 months, perhaps two years old. I knew I wanted to scrap it with the challenge criteria but was coming up stumps for a way to work in the word 'extraordinary' as it related to him as a little boy. Then I had that light bulb moment for the title. Wow. Suddenly, for me, the layout took on a whole new meaning and I love, love, love it. Thanks for the inspiration (again!!) 123!

Scrap Therapy - June

The sketch challenge at Scrap Therapy this month was a tough one. I'm not sure which sadist designed it but, well enough said, let me show you ..

Umm .. what a lot going on huh? LOL!

I have to say I'm happy with my 'bash' at it. I'm kind of enjoying getting a bit more grungy and messy in my scrapping. It's really quite liberating. This layout and my layout Detached were both created on a Ranger non stick craft sheet with a heat gun at my side. LOL ordinarily I'm the kind of scrapper who creates on a huge craft mat so I can line up elements with (near) perfect precision and my Making Memories cutter by my side!!!

Scrap Around The World

Right about now all I can say is O.M.G.!!! I stumbled across an amazing challenge blog, Scrap Around The World, with the most amazing challenges and talented designers from around the world. Wow! The blog has blown me away and I can't wait until I have the time to make myself a cuppa and sit down and fully explore all that it has to offer.

Moving on, I woke up this morning determined that today I was going to get my grunge on, get really arty, and I knew exactly what I wanted to do and with what photo and challenge. That's exactly what I did.

Detached

It was sooooo good to get down and dirty with paints and mists and inks and just let the creativity flow, to allow my mind the freedom to instinctively recreate what I had dreamed. It was just about the most fun I've had scrapping in a really long time. LOL I think I might have to set aside tomorrow for more of the same!

Anyways I used the June 2013 Challenge 2 - An Eclectic/Retro Mood Board By Anupama Choudary at Scrap Around The World when creating this layout. The challenge comprises Anupama Choudary's Mood Board from which to draw inspiration, and a "happy & whimsical" (clearly I missed this bit LOL) sketch by Scrap Around The World's resident sketch artist Julianne McKenna-De Lumen.

Can you imagine my surprise (and shock horror) when late on a winter's afternoon in Melbourne I find the due date for the challenge is the 25th of June (today)! LOL talk about a rushed photo job in less than perfect conditions. At least it wasn't midnight LOL!

So I have no idea if I've followed all the steps for this challenge but I'm going to link it up and see what happens. I have to say it was an absolute blast doing this challenge and I'm looking forward to getting more creative inspiration from Scrap Around The World.   :)

PS: I may just take some fresh photos tomorrow morning when the light is just right, and see if I can't  get not only a far better pic, but some close ups of the texture and other fun 'bits' on my layout.   ;)

Purple Pumpkin June challenge

The sketch for Purple Pumpkin's June challenge popped up in my blog feed the other day and I was instantly smitten. There was just something about it that I really, really liked.

Gorgeous yes? Although the only Purple Pumpkin supplies I have are pretty much 'vintage' now LOL, I decided to give the challenge a go. I couldn't just ignore this gorgeous sketch!

On this layout I have used Purple Pumpkin's crocheted doilies, fabric covered buttons, and pom pom trim. Since I last shopped with Purple Pumpkin, their range has expanded 'somewhat' (LOL) and having now browsed their new product ranges I can feel a wee bit of a shopping spree coming. Inside a dark and anxious mind

As with any drug/treatment, there are often unwanted side effects. The treatment for my MS relapse is no different and recently I find myself struggling with generalised anxiety. I find generalised anxiety quite frustrating because there isn't any specific problem you can work through cognitively or rationally. All I have are the physical symptoms of anxiety which by the end of the day accumulate to a point where I'm desperately looking for the Valium and then when I find it, can barely open the bottle because my hands are shaking so badly!!!!

In the past when cognitive (or other) therapy hasn't worked for my actual anxiety disorder (yep I have one of those too LOL!) I've turned to art to distract myself. This time I turned to scrapbooking.

He's not you

I think you can see I'm not feeling my normal, happy self in this layout. Its kind of dark, and grungy, messy, and haphazard. Yes? Yes!! And that's how it came together, haphazardly. In the light of a new day I like it.

Meanwhile I'm going to continue distracting myself with the help of some fabulous friends, continue scrapping, add in some quilting, and perhaps even throw in some serious house cleaning for good measure in a desperate attempt to keep this anxiety at bay! Until next time .. stay calm, remember to breathe, remind yourselves that "this too shall pass", and keep scrapping!!!   :)

Scrapbook Creations - Design Diva competition

Those of you who know me well know that Scrapbook Creations is my absolute favourite Australian scrapbooking magazine. I am proud to have now had a number of layouts and projects published in Scrapbook Creations and was uber excited when I found out they were running their Design Diva competition again this year.

I had to enter and despite leaving it until almost the last minute to get my entry in, I did. I wasn't successful. I wasn't even short listed LOL! Am I disappointed? Not really, oddly enough. Although it would have been wonderful ..

Of the three required projects, I thought the one that would really let my entry down was my OTP. For the most part, OTPs just aren't my thing. If I have a 'stroke of genius' I can sometimes pull something amazing off, but for the most part OTPs leave me stumped. The problem I found was that no 'strokes of genius' were heading my way in time for me to complete my entry. The only thing left was to create a suite of cards. Ironically, this was the one project Scrapbook Creations wanted to publish!!!!!!! In the end I didn't proceed with having the cards published because, quite honestly, I had put so much work into the techniques, elements and details on the cards, it would have taken me days to write the step by step instructions Scrapbook Creations required for the feature. I can't believe I 'rejected an acceptance' but I guess sometimes other things in life have to take precedence yes?

Kraft It Up - April

The challenge at Kraft It Up is, in my humble opinion, a doozey this month ..

This month we want you to recycle some of that product packaging and use it on your layout, the only must have is that you use Kraft cardstock or Kraft patterned paper!

Um, I either throw out the packaging (which I guess, LOL, is the whole point of this challenge!!!) because I don't need/want it or I keep it because I need/want it. Not having bought anything new (well sort of) very recently, the packaging I had I wanted to keep not use!!! Then I remembered I had recently bought Teresa Collins' He Said She Said "He Said" collection and then I remembered this bit that comes at the front of the collections ..

From the bottom section of my packaging I die-cut two Tim Holtz paper rosettes and punched out several photo corners which I used as arrows. I sooooo wish I had thought of doing this before. I can't tell you how many full sheets of 12x12 patterned paper I've cut into to make my own embellishments when all this time I could have simply used the packaging. You can be sure I'll be doing this again. Thanks for the inspiration Kraft It Up. I knew exactly which photos I'd scrap when I saw this fabulous sketch. It took a little to pull it all together at first but once I got out all the fun, messy stuff, I was on a roll! It was a lot of fun and surprisingly quick (well for me LOL) and easy.

A stitch in time

I still remember my girlfriend (heh SJ!) teaching me how to do back stitch (or is it running stitch?) over the phone from Canberra. She had me get out a piece of cardstock and pierce four holes in it, which I numbered one through to four. She told me to "come up through one, go down through two, then up through three and back down through two, then up through four, and down through three." Huh?!?! LOL!!!! But I got it! I guess the fact that her instructions were very clear and that when I was a lot younger I knew how to embroider helped.

Who knew where that lesson in hand stitching for my LOs would eventually lead!!!

I confess my stitches aren't always the neatest, the same size or even (when required) necessarily straight. But I love the texture and dimension they add to a LO. As I write this post I realise however that I haven't hand stitched on a page in quite some time. For a long while I desperately wanted to use my sewing machine to add stitching but, now seriously don't laugh LOL, was ever so slightly terrified of doing so. Once I got over that 'hurdle' I didn't look back and now when I want to add stitching to my pages I always turn to my sewing machine. Although certainly using the sewing machine is quicker, it achieves an altogether different effect though doesn't it? Note to self .. incorporate some hand stitching on my next project(s).

Meanwhile, thanks SJ for teaching me how to do whatever stitch it is I've used on these LOs all those years ago.    :)

Let's get shabby

I can do shabby. I've done plenty of shabby in the past. Its just not something I'm doing very much of lately. I've been doing an awful lot of grunge. So I decided it was time to shake things up a bit for the New Year and give the challenge at Lets get shabby a go. Although the current challenge (ending today) allowed for three alternative projects, I struggled a bit because they were all Christmas themed. In the end I chose what seemed to me to be the one that was the most 'open to interpretation'. LOL in other words the one that seemed the easiest!!! But it wasn't!!! I've been working on this project here and there for days. Weeks even! LOL I am so glad to finally wrap it up today ..

Santa Keys

The Santa Keys are for our friends' little girl who was born just days before Christmas last year. I hope when she's older, she'll like them and have fun hanging them on her door each year. I know that one day they might move, and so the house number could become 'irrelevant', but figured it would be a nice memento for her in the future of where she spent her early years. LOL if they move between now and Christmas this year I will not be happy!!!

I had a lot of fun with a lot of different products making the Santa Keys. Far too many to list LOL, but I do want to make special mention of the gorgeous Ivory Peony Rose, and Bare Root Roses (which I inked blue) from Ruby{B}Lou. Aren't they just divine???

I'm guessing the next challenge at Lets get shabby won't be Christmas themed and so, just quietly, I can't wait to see it. I really, really want to get my shabby on! Having said that I have a 'secret' project to work on so may be MIA for a while. If that's the case, I'll continue to bore you senseless (?) with earlier LOs and projects. Til then!   :)

Inspired by Creative JumpStart 2013

I read the above quote on a girlfriend's FaceBook page this morning (heh Kiera!) and thought "wow". So many times I am lost for words because, quite simply, there are no words. Those who know me well are probably rolling on the floor laughing at the thought of me lost for words. But seriously guys, you all know what I mean.

At the moment this is kind of how I feel about the Creative JumpStart Summit run by Natalie Kalbach at the beginning of each year. This year is my first and all I can say so far is "wow" because really, there are no words. To date we've been inspired by Nat herself on more than one occasion, Julie Fei-Fan Balzer, Heidi Swapp, Sharon Laakkonen, our very own Louise Nelson, and Karen Ellis. It has been fabulous to watch the online tutorials by these extremely talented artists and to catch a glimpse into what makes their creativity tick.

So, digressing for a moment, GB and I celebrated our 19th wedding anniversary yesterday. Woot woot .. go us LOL!!! We've never really made much of a fuss about our wedding anniversary (we celebrate married life every day .. awwwww!!) but I don't know, there was something different about this year. Our relationship has shifted a little. In a good way. A very good way. We seem to be having more fun lately. Given everything we've been through in the past 19 years some would say its a good thing we're having more fun. I agree! LOL GB would agree too!! So I decided to make him a fun, lighthearted wedding anniversary card. I didn't want to go all pink and red and romantic on him and was left wondering what I could do. Then I remembered I had some of the uber talented and fabulous Charmane Koch's Charms Creations Heavenly Hearts in my stash.

19 years

Okay so it may not seem like much. Granted, it is just a card after all. But for those of you who know my usual 'style' this is so far outside of the box for me its almost scary!!! I have been so inspired by all the fabulous Creative JumpStart tutorials that I literally just jumped out of my safety zone when creating the background for this card. It looks nothing like I planned and comprises many, many layers of inking and painting and misting and stamping. I just kept on going until I was happy and here's the best part .. it was fun, fun, FUN!!!! I've had fun in the past with mixed media and enjoyed getting my hands dirty but this was different. This was addictive. Admittedly I did create five canvases for Christmas presents (yet to share), but could this wee little card herald the beginnings of a new direction for my scrapping?? All I know is I'm hanging to finish my current project and get started on a LO inspired by Louise Nelson's fabulous crackle backgrounds!!!

Oh and keeping in theme with the light-hearted nature of our wedding anniversary 'celebrations', this is what I put on the inside of the card and yes, it made GB smile, and no I didn't want to know the answer to the question posed!!!!

Honey I know you're not reading this, but here's to the next 19!   :)

PS: Who gives away handmade gifts at Christmas without taking photographs of them first? Me it seems.   :(

PPS: I made a few cards the other day before I became engrossed in the JumpStart tutorials. I'll try to remember to post them tomorrow so you can see exactly what I mean about this card sooooo not being my 'style'.   :)

Melbourne in Summer

Melbourne in Summer is hot. Sometimes chilly when those long awaited cool changes come through. Frequently muggy, steamy and wet. It can be windy, thundery and subject to tropical storms and wild weather. Yet often dry and did I mention hot?? LOL and all of that in just one day!!!!

Traditionally, to escape the heat, my family and friends have holidayed at one of the various beautiful, beach locales in Victoria; or if they have the misfortune of having to work (gah!), headed to a local beach of the evening and on the weekends. These days with GB working through the festive season I spend my days quietly indoors (don't panic! we have air con LOL!!) longing for days past of being a beach bum, escaping the heat to hit the waves, and basically have fun like this little dude ..

Scrap the Boys - November

I rarely participate in the Scrap the Boys challenges. Not having any boys of my own to scrap, other than GB (who hates having his photo taken!) I'm usually short of photos to scrap. ScrapChat - July challenge

Well it's been a long time between drinks you might say. As the maintenance and insurance work being done to our home draws to a close we find ourselves finally in the position of being able to continue unpacking and sorting our 'stuff'. As a result I suddenly have less time to scrap. That's going to have to change though because a girlfriend is having a little girl in September and I want to give her a 9x9 album fully scrapped for her to just pop photos into as a gift. LOL at my current rate of scrapping I will be pushing it to get the album finished but this is one project I am determined to get in on time!!!

In the interim, yesterday I found myself with a day free. Yes it was a day I could have spent more time doing more unpacking and sorting, but I was just a tad tired and more than a little over the whole unpacking thing! So I scrapped. Just the one layout, but scrapped nonetheless. It's my layout for the monthly challenge I set over at ScrapChat. The July challenge criteria were ..

ScrapChat - June challenge

The challenge at ScrapChat this month was to create a layout that met the following criteria ..

*  Colours - navy blue, hot pink and lime
*  Design requirement - hexagons
*  Something different - definitions (interpret this how you like)
*  Lifelines - black, white, cream, kraft

I'm not 100% sure about my resulting layout. I created it yesterday when the painters were here (all day). Ordinarily I don't scrap particularly well outside of my literal comfort zone, and having a bunch of blokes around all day definitely took me well outside my comfort zone! Too much eye candy to concentrate LOL!! So anyway this layout came together very haphazardly. At the same time though I was determined to just scrap it. I didn't want to fluff around and take forever determining placement etc. I think that shows? Maybe that's why I'm not sure of it??? Anyway here it is ..
